Accuro (Care Services) is a registered charity that supports people of all ages with disabilities as well as providing much needed respite relief to families and carers. We run several projects and the one for which we are seeking funding is our Summer Holiday Scheme. Every year we run the Summer Holiday Scheme to provide access to leisure activities for children with special needs that they would otherwise not be able to participate. Our qualified Project Coordinator matches a Family Support Worker who will work with the child and parents/carers. Together they plan activities in which the child would like to take part. This could include going to the cinema, bowling or a trip to the park. We are able to provide, on average, a 3-hour session once a week for up to six weeks. This has the added benefit of providing a much-needed break for families. This means they can spend more time doing other things such as more quality time with their other children. This will increase a sense of well-being within the family group. This service started in 2000 in response to direct needs identified by our users. The difference the scheme makes ensures that children with disabilities have fun and enjoyment during the summer holiday period. This helps create confidence, increases self-esteem and promotes a sense of well being. An added benefit to this scheme is that it provides a much-needed break for parents/carers. We have received very positive feedback from our users from our scheme in 2007. They tell us things such as "this service is a life-saver" and "more, more, more of the same please" In 2007 we were able to provide this service to 79 families and in 2006 the number was 56 thus showing a significant increase in the need for this scheme.
